The Answers You Need

1. When will I know when it’s time to start planning for End of Life decisions?
It is never too soon to begin to plan for end of life. It’s better to plan while you are well and healthy. You can always update your plan every three years or as needed.

2. I heard that Hospice kills people, It this true?
False, Hospice does not kill people. Hospice helps to maintain comfort and provide a better quality of living towards the end of life.

3. Do I need my doctor’s permission to sign up with Hospice?
Yes, you will need an order from your Primary Care doctor and the Hospice doctor to be admitted to a Hospice Program.

4. How will I pay for Hospice?

Medicare Part A will pay 100% of your Hospice Care, Respite Care and any equipment you will need. You pay no out of pocket cost.

5. Will I have to stop taking all of my medications once I am admitted to Hospice?

No, you can continue whatever medications you feel are necessary however, you will have to pay for any medication that is not related to your Hospice diagnosis.

6. Once you/family member family agree to Hospice what is the next step?

A Registered Nurse will come to you, wherever you call home and complete a total assessment (physical, emotional and spiritual review).

7. What is the difference between Hospice & Palliative Care?

Palliative Care is to keep you comfortable.

A specialized doctor will monitor your comfort.

8. Who pays for Palliative Care?

Whatever health insurance you currently have will cover Palliative Care just as it would any other specialist such as a Cardiologist, Endocrinologist, etc.
